Bizarre Take #13- I Want a Wife Deep Dive 🤿
I want a wife. Not even a question. Just a demand. I want a wife. I want a wife who does this. I want a wife who does that. Nothing else to it other than a plain title. A category. This is the same truth Judy Brady breaks down in her piece “I want a wife”; a satirical analysis on men’s perceptions of women’s roles in society, let alone their own marriage. While reading this, it took me a while to realize this was satire, but through the constant repetition of the phrase “I want a wife”, as well as the use of irony, I was able to discover Brady’s true intentions whilst writing this.
. Brady uses this satire to criticize men for their views on their wives and their demeaning demeanor. She invokes sarcasm when she writes, “Who wouldn’t want a wife?”, to show how men are so used to these unrealistic standards forced on their partners. She also uses irony when she says “I want a wife who will not bother me…but will listen to me” to demonstrate the double standards shown by men and how women are not treated with the mutual respect they deserve. She achieves the same effect when she says, “I want a wife who will remain sexually faithful to me.. I want her to understand my sexual needs may entail more than monogamy”, showing a more extreme double standard enforced onto women. This goes to show how Brady makes a clear progression throughout her piece, starting off with more reasonable things, like “taking care of the children”, to cheating on their partners and forcing women to accept it. All these details show how Brady is not so subtly exposing how men have such unrealistic standards on women. It does so in a very exposed way, using irony and sarcasm to tackle these sensitive topics. Overall, Brady does a good job analyzing this gender dynamic and how it can potentially lead to faulty marriages as well :(

I like that you noticed the progression in her retorts from casual to serious topics. I also like how you used the quotes to demonstrate the sarcasm.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you noticed the way she talks from casual topics to more serious ones. I also really liked how much emphasis you put in the beginning.
