Bizarre Take #16: Canceled or Nah? πŸ…πŸ…

“ You’re Canceled!” Cancel Culture has risen as a popular media tactic used against various celebrities and personalities when they commit acts that may come across as socially unacceptable. Figures like James Charles, Kanye, and even Ellen, popular talk show host. These are done with the intent to hold the said person accountable for their deliberate actions and create a sense of publicity through these controversial takes, gaining traction quickly through likes and follows.  Oftentimes though, these issues never get resolved at the end, and are transformed into a publicity stunt just to gain followers and get clicks. Canceling internet celebrities is an act done frequently, and allows for the targeted personality to be held accountable for their actions as well as raise awareness for sensitive or taboo topics that may spark controversy.

The act of canceling famous figures in the media allows for them to take accountability for their actions and learn the important ideal of responsibility. Forcing celebrities to be recognized for their socially unacceptable mistakes can often push them into a sense of reform, hopefully triggering them to change their ways for the future. Many celebrities, such as Jenna Marbles, have gotten canceled on various racial discriminatory terms, such as blackface or derogatory terms. Jenna Marbles, who got shunned for blackface and posting a series of offensive videos, iimmediately took to her most popular media platform to make an apology video. Through this form of social exposure, it taught her to take responsibility and change her actions for the future, which she did by taking a break from youtube. Jenna is one of the few celebrities to take this public revelation as a way to learn and grow as a figure, and learn the ideal of accountability. Cancel culture, although can be a form of social rejection, can be used as a form of teaching and can encourage those who do wrong to fix their mistakes. Some may say that Cancel Culture  may not trigger a response from the individual to make any change, shown through the exam of Kanye. Given his enormous amount of wealth and power, he doesn’t feel the need to reform, and refuses to take accountability, something that may occur with celebrities who have risen up to a high status. However, this social exposure is still enough to influence many other people, especially the public, to the severity of topics and advocates for change.

  1. I really liked how you mentioned how useless cancel culture can be, especially when it comes to people of power. It was a nice perspective to hear :)
